Healthcare construction across the North East

A contractor your clinical team can trust

Construction and refurbishment in a healthcare environment is unlike any other sector. Patients and clinical staff cannot be put at risk, infection control is non-negotiable and the operational reality of a live clinical setting has to be respected from day one.

MDS NE delivers construction, fit-out and mechanical works across healthcare premises throughout the North East including GP surgeries, dental practices, clinics, care homes and private medical facilities. We understand the governance requirements, the infection control protocols and the need to work quietly, cleanly and around the people who depend on that facility every day.

CHAS accredited, fully insured and experienced in working across NHS and private healthcare environments throughout Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Northumberland. Every project comes with full compliance documentation, RAMS and as-built records bundled at handover.

Healthcare construction

What makes healthcare construction different

Construction in a healthcare environment is fundamentally different to standard commercial construction.

The risks are higher, the requirements are stricter and the consequences of getting it wrong affect real people.

Here is what sets healthcare construction apart and why it requires a contractor with the right experience and approach.

  • Infection control

In a standard commercial environment dust and debris are an inconvenience. In a clinical environment they are a patient safety risk. Healthcare construction requires detailed infection control risk assessments, physical barriers between the construction zone and clinical areas, specialist clean-down protocols and in some cases negative pressure enclosures to contain airborne particles. Every healthcare project we deliver starts with a full infection control plan agreed with the facilities team before work begins.

  • Working around vulnerable people

Healthcare premises are occupied by patients who may be elderly, immunocompromised or otherwise vulnerable. Construction noise, dust and disruption can cause genuine distress and in some cases health risks. We plan every healthcare project to minimise the impact on patients and residents, phasing works away from occupied areas where possible and scheduling the noisiest elements for times when patient activity is lowest.

  • CQC compliance

Healthcare premises in England are regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Any construction or refurbishment works that affect the clinical environment must be carried out to a standard that maintains CQC compliance throughout. This means detailed method statements, documented risk assessments and a clean, safe handover that meets the regulatory standard the facility operates to.

  • Operational continuity

A healthcare facility cannot simply close for refurbishment. GP surgeries, dental practices and care homes need to keep operating throughout construction works. We plan every healthcare project around the operational constraints of the facility, phasing works to maintain clinical capacity and agreeing access windows with the clinical team before work begins on site.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Have you worked in clinical settings before?
Yes. We carry out construction, fit-out and mechanical works in a range of clinical settings across the North East including GP surgeries, dental practices, clinics and care homes. We understand the operational constraints of live clinical environments, the infection control requirements and the governance documentation that healthcare clients need at handover. Every healthcare project we deliver is planned around the specific needs of the facility and the people who depend on it.
Can you work around live patient operations?

Yes. We carry out construction and refurbishment works in occupied healthcare premises across the North East. We phase works carefully to maintain clinical capacity throughout the programme, agree access windows with the clinical team before work begins and schedule the noisiest elements of the works for times when patient activity is lowest. Where works need to be carried out in areas directly adjacent to clinical spaces we use hoarding and dust barriers to protect patients and staff throughout.

Do you produce infection control method statements?
Yes. Every healthcare project we deliver starts with a detailed infection control method statement agreed with the facilities team before work begins on site. This covers the physical barriers between the construction zone and clinical areas, clean-down protocols, waste removal procedures and any specialist measures required for the specific clinical environment. We treat infection control as a non-negotiable requirement on every healthcare project regardless of the size or scope of the works.
Do you work out of hours in healthcare settings?

Yes. Out of hours working is standard practice for us on healthcare projects where daytime disruption to patients and staff is not acceptable. We work evenings, nights and weekends to fit around clinical operations and we plan out of hours programmes carefully to make sure the right trades, materials and equipment are in place before work begins. All out of hours working is priced transparently as part of your project quotation.

Do you handle all compliance documentation?
Yes. We provide a full compliance documentation pack on handover covering RAMS, method statements, commissioning records, electrical and gas certificates, as-built drawings and any other documentation required by your governance team. Everything is indexed and handed over in one pack so nothing is missing and nothing needs to be chased after practical completion.
